How this calculator works
Hill’s Pet Nutrition gives a simple rule of thumb: 1 ounce of fluids per pound of body weight a day. A 10-pound dog needs about 10 ounces, and a 100-pound dog needs about 100.
What changes how much a dog drinks
- Drinks more: very active dogs, dogs in hot weather, nursing dogs and many puppies.
- Drinks less: dogs that eat wet food, because the food already holds water.
How to check your dog’s real intake
- Fill the bowl with a measured amount.
- Top up with measured water through the day and note each amount.
- Measure what is left after 24 hours, then subtract it from the total.
