Stainless Steel Cat Water Fountain, 108 oz

A simple cleaning schedule

BISSELL’s fountain safety guide gives a routine most owners can follow: fresh water daily, a full clean weekly, and a new filter every two to four weeks. Follow your own fountain’s manual if it says otherwise.

  • Every day: check the level and top up or replace the water.
  • Every week: take it apart and wash every part, including the pump.
  • Every 2–4 weeks: change the filter.

What is the slime in a cat fountain?

That slippery film is usually biofilm, a layer of bacteria and saliva that builds up on wet surfaces. It grows in bowls too. It cannot be prevented for good, so the real answer is to wash it off regularly.

How to clean a fountain properly

  1. Unplug the fountain and empty it.
  2. Take off the top, filter and pump.
  3. Wash the parts in warm soapy water, and use a small brush inside the pump.
  4. Rinse well so no soap stays behind.
  5. Reassemble it, refill it and plug it back in.

Does the material matter?

Yes, because it changes how easy the job is. Plastic picks up scratches over time. Stainless steel is smooth and non-porous, so it is simpler to wash. It still needs the same weekly clean.

Common questions

Can I just rinse it?

A rinse removes loose hair but not the film. Wash it with soap and a brush at least once a week.

When should I see a vet?

If your cat suddenly drinks far more or far less than usual, call your vet. A change in thirst can be a sign of a health problem.
