Dog Age Calculator: Dog Years to Human Years

The times-seven rule is a myth. A medium dog is about 15 in human years at age 1, about 24 at age 2 and about 60 at age 10. Larger dogs age faster.

How this calculator works

The medium column is the American Veterinary Medical Association chart for dogs of 21 to 50 pounds. The small column uses the slower step of about 4 years per year. The large column is our own estimate, adding one year per year after age 5, because larger dogs age faster.

Why does the calculator show a second number?

Researchers who studied DNA changes in Labradors proposed a different formula: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, as UC Davis explains. It gives a higher number for young dogs, so we show both. Neither one is exact.

When is a dog a senior?

The AVMA, quoted by the AKC, says small dogs are generally senior at about 7, and larger breeds at about 5 to 6.

Common questions

How old is a 3-year-old dog in human years?

About 28 for a small or medium dog.

How old is a 10-year-old dog in human years?

About 56 for a small dog and 60 for a medium dog. Large dogs are older.

Is one dog year really seven human years?

No. Dogs age fastest in the first two years, and size changes the rate after that.
