How to remove matted cat fur safely at home

Work small mats apart with a comb, starting at the tip and holding the fur at the base. Do not cut mats with scissors. Large or tight mats close to the skin need a groomer or vet.

Dematting Comb for Dogs and Cats

First, check the mat

Slide a comb gently between the mat and the skin. If it fits, you can usually work on it at home. If the mat sits tight against the skin, leave it to a professional. Ask a Cat Groomer names two safe ways to remove mats: combing them out fully, or shaving them with professional clippers.

How to work out a small mat

  1. Wait until your cat is calm, for example after a meal.
  2. Hold the fur at the base, between the mat and the skin, so you do not pull on it.
  3. Tease the outer edge with your fingers, then a comb.
  4. Work from the tip toward the skin in small sections.
  5. Stop after a few minutes, offer a treat, and continue later.

Why you should not use scissors

Cat skin is thin and often lifts into the mat, so it is very easy to cut by accident. If you cannot see the skin clearly, do not cut.

How to stop mats coming back

  • Comb long-haired cats every day, and short-haired cats about once a week.
  • Focus on the armpits, belly, behind the ears and the back of the legs.
  • Older or overweight cats may groom less, so check them more often.

When to see a professional

Go to a groomer or vet if the mats are large, cover much of the body, or your cat is in pain. Skin under a mat can become sore, and a vet can check it.

Common questions

Why does my cat suddenly have mats?

A cat that stops grooming may be in pain, unwell or simply older. If mats appear suddenly, ask your vet.

Can I bathe out a mat?

Water usually tightens a mat. Remove it while the fur is dry.
