Why is my cat not drinking water? Causes and what to do

Cats often drink little by nature, especially on wet food. But a cat that suddenly stops drinking needs a call to your vet the same day. For healthy cats, a few simple changes can help.

When to call the vet

Call your vet the same day if your cat has stopped drinking, is also not eating, is vomiting, seems weak, or has a change in litter box habits. These can be signs of illness, and no bowl or fountain will fix that.

Common everyday reasons

  • Wet food: it contains a lot of water, so these cats often drink less.
  • A dirty bowl: cats can be fussy about old water or a slimy bowl.
  • The location: many cats dislike water next to their food or litter box.
  • The bowl: a deep or narrow bowl can press on sensitive whiskers.

How to encourage a healthy cat to drink

  1. Offer fresh water every day and wash the bowl regularly.
  2. Put several water stations around your home, away from the litter box.
  3. Try a wide, shallow bowl in steel, ceramic or glass.
  4. Add more wet food to the diet, after checking with your vet.
  5. Try moving water. Some cats prefer it, and many will drink from a tap.

Does a water fountain help?

It helps some cats, but not all. Moving water is worth trying for cats that like the tap. Put the fountain where your cat already spends time, and keep the old bowl out while your cat gets used to it. A fountain needs a weekly clean to stay fresh.

Common questions

How can I tell if my cat is drinking enough?

Watch for changes in the litter box and in your cat’s energy. Your vet can check for dehydration if you are unsure.

My cat suddenly drinks far more than usual. Is that bad?

It can be a sign of a health problem, so ask your vet.
